Stan the flying dog isn’t afraid to paraglide with his owner, and he just enjoys the view

Daredevil dog Stan used to watch his owner, Alex Colbeck, 34, from North Yorkshire, go paragliding; then one day he got a custom-made canine harness and took to the skies himself.

Adventure-loving British dog paraglides with his owner

It is a bird? It is a plane? No, it’s Stan the flying dog paragliding through the sky.

Adventure-loving Stan “doesn’t like being indoors for long” preferring to jump off cliffs with his owner, Alex Colbeck, 34, from North Yorkshire.

The six-year-old miniature schnauzer has his own custom-made dog harness that allows him to see spectacular views from above.

The daredevil pup has no fear of heights and loves to people-watch, although he often gets a little too excited in the air when he sees squirrels.

Alex said: “I thought that riding a car, boat or other means of transport must be equally strange for a dog, so why not try paragliding?”

Alex, an IT contractor, continued: “Stan is used to being surrounded by paragliders taking off and landing, so the sights and sounds don’t disturb him.

“I introduced him to his harness, which clips securely to my own harness, on a few occasions before he went flying.

“And then on his first flight, I hooked him up and off we went.

“I was watching him closely and praising him all the way through the flight and couldn’t see any signs of fear or anxiety.

“I landed after a couple of minutes, unbuckled it and it seemed fine, so we did two slightly longer flights that day.

“Once we’re airborne, Stan is practically resting on my lap, inside his harness.

“He just watches the world go by on the floor while being petted.

“I can see his head moving as he watches people on the beach or sheep in the fields.”

Stan has flown over Marske-by-the-Sea and over a hill near Kettlewell in the Yorkshire Dales.

Being able to fly with his dogs adds another aspect to the sport that Alex already loves.

He says that the couple can go for a walk up a hill or mountain and instead of walking down, they can enjoy a flight together, which adds a little extra excitement and incredible views.

Alex explained: “I have a paraglider wing and harness for myself and one for Stan, which is a custom made dog harness.

“All equipment is made from extremely strong materials by professional manufacturers, much like skydiving equipment.

“Stan is very laid back and compliant in most situations, except when he sees a squirrel.

“I spent hours training him when he was a puppy and we have an extremely strong bond.

“He goes where I go. He has a great life and spends a lot of time outdoors enjoying long walks in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors.

“People are very surprised when they see us paragliding together and most people have never seen anything like this before. It’s a surprise to most!”
